KEYNOTE PANEL: ALTERNATIVE BUSINESS MODELS IN DENTISTRY

Erin Bokshowan is a lawyer with MLT Aikins LLP, and specializes in corporate law and tax law. Erin assists clients at all stages of the business cycle, from incorporation to winding-up, ensuring all transactions are undertaken in a tax-efficient manner. She has a great deal of experience advising professionals, including oral health professionals. She provides advice on the incorporation of professional corporations, the preparation of associate fee sharing agreements and cost sharing agreements, and the purchase and sale of dental practices. She also assists clients in general estate planning matters, including the preparation of wills, powers of attorney, and advance health care directives.

Peter Nkansah, MSc, DDS, Dip. Anaes., FADSA, Specialist in Dental Anaes. (ON), FPFA, FACD
Dr. Nkansah received both his DDS degree and Diploma in Dental Anaesthesia from the University of Toronto in 1993 and 1996 respectively. He now maintains a private practice at Sleep For Dentistry in Toronto, specializing in sedation dentistry for dentally anxious or medically compromised patients. In addition, he is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry as well as the Course Director for their intravenous conscious sedation continuing dental education course. Peter is a Course Director for the conscious sedation continuing dental education course at Western University (Canada) and for Advanced Cardiac Life Support courses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is a member of the editorial board for the dental journal Oral Health. He is also a regular lecturer for dental groups nationally and internationally. On the sports front, one of his other areas of interest, Peter is the team dentist for the Toronto Raptors of the NBA, the Raptors 905 of the NBDL, and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

Carlos González-Cabezas, DDS, MSD, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.  In 2015, Dr. Gonzalez was named Director of Global Initiatives in Oral and Craniofacial Health at the School of Dentistry and was appointed as the Richard Christiansen Collegiate Professor of Oral and Craniofacial Global Initiatives.  His research interests are mostly related to increasing our understanding of dental caries and their clinical management. He is engaged in numerous research projects with particular interest remineralization, fluorides, oral biofilms, biosensors, diagnosis, and oral health products in general.

Dr. Cohn graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba in 1991. She then went on to complete a post graduate internship in Children's Dentistry at Health Science Centre Children's Hospital. Dr. Cohn entered into private practice after graduation and dedicated most of the first decade to working and raising her three sons. She was alarmed at the rampant tooth decay she encountered in very young children, despite all of the knowledge and education available on preventing tooth decay. Dr. Cohn wanted to help these children regain their health in a quick and efficient manner and thus began her second decade in practice. Today Dr. Cohn’s private practice, at Kid’s Dental, the focus is on prevention.

Dr. Bernie White graduated from the College of Dentistry in the “First Class” in 1972 and practiced general dentistry in Saskatoon up to July 2012.  Dr. White served on the Council of College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CDSS) from 1979-1984 and as President in 1983.  In 1989 he was appointed to the Canadian Dental Association Board representing Saskatchewan, he served on CDA Executive Council from 1989 – 1995.  In 2005, Dr. White was appointed CEO/Registrar of the CDSS.

Audrey has been practicing as a Public Health Nutritionist in northern Saskatchewan for 11 years.  She came to La Ronge to join the Population Health Unit after completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba and internship in Winnipeg, The Pas and Flin Flon.  She has a passion for healthy early childhood development, public policies that influence health, and capacity building to empower people to make their own choices.  She has taught the first year nutrition course to northern pre professional students through the University of Regina, chairs the Healthy Eating Team and is involved in various groups that strive to promote health in the north and across Saskatchewan.

Dr. Gerry Uswak received his DMD from the University of Manitoba (1989), His MPH from the University of North Carolina (1992) and his Diploma in Dental Public Health from the North Carolina Division of Dental Health (1993). He completed his GPR at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg (1990). He joined the College of Dentistry as an Associate Professor in 2005 and is in he second 5-year term as Dean. He teaches Dental Practice Management and maintains a Dental Public Health consulting practice. He has practiced in various locations including Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Bolivia. His clinical practice was primarily hospital-based Pediatric Dentistry.

She moved west to Saskatoon to do her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Saskatchewan. Janet began her public health dental career in 1974 with the Saskatchewan Dental Plan. After completing her education in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene she spent two years working with the Saskatchewan Dental Plan in Saskatoon before moving to LaRonge Sask. in 1979.

Janet’s passion is public health; she is respectful of all aspects of health in her messaging while being dedicated to helping advance the dental health profession.  Janet is committed to helping people achieve their goals and sees the best in people.  She is a very strong advocate for inter-jurisdictional services and for acquiring comprehensive dental services for residents of Saskatchewan.  

Janet was a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences panel through to the completion of the document “Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Canadians”.

 Dr. Teekasingh is a 1996 graduate of the College of Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan. Upon graduation he completed his dental residency at Royal University Hospital (RUH) in 1997. Shortly thereafter he was appointed on staff at the Department of Dentistry at RUH and continues to be an active member in the department. He was on faculty at the College of Dentistry from 1997 to 2003 and continues to contribute to dental education as a guest lecturer in various disciplines. He maintains his practice through RUH where he serves as program and clinic director of the General Practice Dental Residency program. Dr. Teekasingh has served on numerous committees for the CDSS, CDA and CDAC . He is also one of the founding members of the Canadian Association of Hospital Dentists. The dental program at RUH is unique in that it provides 24/7 on call services as well as dental treatment for medically complex patients including head and neck oncology and stem cell transplant patients.

Dr. Bob Wood

Dr. Wood graduated with his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1982. He went on to complete specialty training in Radiology and an MSc degree at Toronto and then a PhD in Odontology at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town South Africa. He also completed his FRCD (C ) in Maxillofacial Radiology. Dr. Wood became a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology in 2004. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Science and sits on the certification and examination committees of the American Board of Forensic Odontology.
Bob is an Associate Professor and member of Graduate Faculty at the University of Toronto where he supervises graduate students He is Chief Forensic Dentist for the Coroners Office of the Province of Ontario.

Dr. Packota was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He received his DMD from the University of Saskatchewan, and obtained his M Sc degree and specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. He has been a faculty member at the College of Dentistry since 1985. At the College of Dentistry, he served as Head of the previous Department of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences, and was Acting Associate Dean for one year. Dr. Packota is a former President of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and the Canadian Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, and has served as an examiner for his specialty with the RCDC for many years.
